Our Story

 

July 13, 2017 at 11:30 am, Robert Lansburgh was eating a Miami mango in his kitchen, he said to his wife, while in awe of its flavor and with a tone of praise, “there should be a mango festival here in Miami Beach”.  Minutes later, a coincidental conversation with a Miami Beach Commissioner, the epiphany was shared, “What do you think about a Mango festival here in Miami Beach?” and a resounding “yes”.  

 

After making a few calls and speaking with friends, the choice was obvious Allen Susser would join our team.  Allen and Robert have known each other for over 30 years. When Robert was 12 years old, Allen was the head Chef at the Monaco Dining Room at Turnberry Isle.  Years later, Allen would open his famed restaurant, Chef Allen’s and go on to become a James Beard Award recipient and an icon in world cuisine circles.

 

Allen and Robert quickly decided the festival should benefit a charity.  Big Brother and Big Sisters of Miami, of which Robert is a Big brother, was a natural as Robert’s Aunt Merle was a social worker there for over 40 years.  She ecstatically put us together to form the partnership. She is also an avid Mango enthusiast and has provided many people ripe Mangos during the season as she collects from friends the harvest.  Thanks Aunt Merle!

The two enjoy a shared heritage, history, and our Mango lovers.
